Can we test the power of streaming by proving me wrong and send a strong message to covid that we will be strong and beat this terrible virus by streaming a song called We will be strong by Thin Lizzy available on all good streaming apps.

How depressing the charts are these days? Dominated by RnB drivel which bares no resemblance to proper rhythm n blues! Mild mannered artists like Ed Sheeran, easy listening dance acts and the few rock acts that do make the charts are safe with not an ounce of rebellion! Wheres the excitement, the energy the bands that wasn’t afraid to shock and rebel? Where are the new music scenes to break out of the underground to take on the mainstream dullness? Looking at the charts today is full of dreary, safe, dull & identical dross that your grandmother wouldn’t mind listening to

Haven't used this for a long time, I don't know if my main disqus account is still suspended from this chat I'll have to check but it's nice to be here again.
It's amazing to see Olivia start off her career with a #1 debut that nobody saw coming. 'Driver's License' is quite good, but I don't think spectacular, but it definitely shows the potential she has to do spectacular things in the future and she is a new artist in her own and I have strong hopes for her.
As for 'Sweet Melody', I am beyond proud that they got this number 1 as it shows that even through the struggles of mean management under Syco, Simon Cowell etc and a lose in faith for their career that they came back with a smash and a deliver. I have also loved some of their recent music from their album 'Confetti' with some real smashers like 'Happiness' and 'Holiday'!!!
It's nice to see the arrival of 'Chemtrails Over the Country Club' by Lana Del Rey make an appearance with a really intriguing music video and very pleasant song.
The rise for 'My Head & My Heart' by Ava Max is also very exciting as she begins to break from her "one hit wonder" plague that really was a black cloud over her career. I hope to see more from her in the future and I'm excited to see what's in store for the deluxe edition of 'Heaven & '.
Whew that was a mouthful, hopefully I'll get back on my main account at some point and hope you all stay well!!

There's actually a debate on BBC News channel right this minute about how streaming is robbing artists of the money they should get. We should be supporting our artists by either buying the physical product or download. And not stream which is robbing the artist.

avatar

GS

2

good for them

DK

Dave Knight

-4

Well its not good news for the artists. We need to support them and buy the music properly, streaming is evil.

GS

the artists couldnt care less about whether we buy or stream their songs 😂. its 2021 grow up

GS

2

DK

If you guys follow the news and read papers you will see that streaming is killing the music industry.

avatar

GS

1

do you have nothing better to do in your sad little life than to sit on the comments section of the charts and moan about streaming?

DK

Dave Knight

-2

Well it concerns me.

DK

Dave Knight

-2

I would be a fan of streaming if I knew it meant the artists were paid better. But I am dismayed by the fact streaming only contributes to a chart position via more than one stream, so you can see I think its unfair, compared to when one sale meant exactly that one phyical product which I could play all day if I wanted. But somone at home could stream the same song all day on loop but it wouldn't even contribute to the chart. So its not a good indication as to how well loved that artist is compared to buying their physical product.

Yeah, I think it's confusing if it is on or out of ACR. I think it came off ACR last week due to it dropping low from 17 to 60 I believe due to Christmas songs so I don't know where it is going to chart on next week. It should have been on the Top 10 already. But I am scared to say that it might be less likely to go on the Top 40 again because it was predicted last week that it would go on the Top 40 at #39 but it didn't.

DK

Dave Knight

-1

Can someone answer my question. If streaming contributes or influences most of the top 100 these days, can someone explain to me how many streams of a song are needed for it to get to number 100 for example?
And does it only count if its multiple streams from different streamers?
What I mean is if it takes 1000 streams to get to number 100, could one person do that by leaving the song played non stop over several days or whatever? Or would it need to be a collective 1000 streams from different people?
Only reason I ask is it confused me a bit when Wham got to number 1 with Last Christmas a week too late, its was already the new year before it peaked at number 1,which would suggest people had it playing on loop non stop the week leading up to new years day. I find it strange or hard to believe how so many hundreds of thousands of people would stream a Christmas song a week after Christmas day compared to the weeks leading up to it. In times gone by people would have already bought the Christmas singles in the weeks leading up to Christmas not the week between Christmas and New years day.
I find it all very confusing, so apologies about that, but I'm worried people could easily maniplulate the charts for personal gain, in other words and artist could play their songs non stop or get fans to stream certain songs via their social media sites to help the song in the charts.

avatar

⁉️

2

I’m pretty sure on most streaming services, only 10 streams are counted per person per day.

avatar

Mrsliver

4

100 streams equals 1 sale

DK

Dave Knight

-1

So that makes it even more unbelievable doesnt it?
So if the same person streams a song 10 times a day that is one push towards a chart position?
If so how could so many people get it wrong and get Last Christmas to number 1 on New years day? It seems odd to me.

avatar

GS

3

because the tracking started on xmas day

DK

Dave Knight

-2

My God if thats the case why is streaming allowed to influence chart positions? That's crazy!

avatar

GS

4

because its literally how everyone listens to music nowadays!!

avatar

⁉️

2

Not really, you need like 150 streams for a sale, so a person (using multiple streaming services) could only do around 20-30 equalvalent sales a week.

Whereas, you need around 10,000 for Top 100 (I think I remember that anyway).

DK

Dave Knight

-1

But mighty unfair on the artist isnt it? It will take a lot longer to reach one sale if 100 streams only count one sale. Statistics like that are awful for the artist. I mean who plays a song 100 times a day?

avatar

GS

5

i played drivers licence 130 times in a day

DK

Dave Knight

0

Its just all become a joke to me, I know I am obviously old school but streaming must mean artists are getting a raw deal.

avatar

⁉️

5

Because what else are you supposed to go off?

Sales only make up about 3% or so for what counts towards the chart, and the whole point of the chart is to show what music is popular.

avatar

GS

4

exactly!!

DK

Dave Knight

0

Yeah but I grew up when it was only physical sales contributed to the charts. I will give you an example why its farcicle today. An artist was number 1 in the download charts just before xmas but it didnt even appear in the official top 100. Very odd that is.

avatar

⁉️

4

Because they get a lot of streams?

The top song on this week’s Spotify chart has about 5 million streams, which is around 50,000 units.

avatar

GS

4

you grew up in a completely different time though. the charts have changed. music has changed!

DK

Dave Knight

1

But that must be rare and take all day and night to achieve

avatar

⁉️

4

This is a completely different time though. Things change over time, and streaming is just the most relevant.

And as for the song, sales can’t carry a song, it probably got to about 5000 sales, and then maybe about 3-4 streaming units.

avatar

GS

2

took me 4 hours.

avatar

⁉️

4

I worked it out, and that would only take 8 hours*.

And still, only 10 of those counted towards the chart.

*130 (the amount of plays) x 4 (the length of the song in minutes) = 520 (the amount of minutes it would take.

That’s just over 8 hours.

DK

Dave Knight

1

I'm all for moving with the times, but streaming seems to be starving artists of the money from sales they otherwise would have got.

DK

Dave Knight

0

Exactly, I wouldn't want to be an artist today. We should be nurturing our artists, not starving them of sales.

avatar

⁉️

4

You see though, if sales were the only way to listen to music, I guarantee most people wouldn’t ever bother, therefore killing off the music industry.

DK

Dave Knight

-1

Plus it makes the industry more turbulant, or in other words to the extreme and you are either extremely likely to get a big hit or extremely unlikely if your the type of artist that has old school fans who prefer to buy the physical product.

avatar

Dan Love

0

600 'free streams' - ad-funded (e.g. spotify) are equal to 1 sale and 100 paid-for streams - subscription services (e.g. Apple Music) are equal to 1 sale. If a song goes onto ACR then the streams are halved

avatar

⁉️

3

Isn’t that a problem with only including sales?

DK

Dave Knight

-1

I dont know why because it wasent like that before.
In the 70's and 80's it would have taken hunderds of thousands of vinyl singles to get in the top 40 which highlights the industry was healthier back then.

avatar

⁉️

4

Probably because that was the only way to do it back then.

Plus, a chart that’s inaccurate to what people actually listen to isn’t very healthy if you ask me.

DK

Dave Knight

0

No because it more fair across the board. For example older artists like Pink Floyd, Status Quo, Rod Stewart, Elton John etc etc have a fan base that probably dont stream, they are like me and would rather buy the cd or even vinyl record. Which means they wont get a look in on the official singles charts, but could have a number 1 album via cd sales. AC/DC just proved that they had a number 1 album just before xmas, but the singles from it didnt even dent the top 100,because streaming is dominating everything.

DK

Dave Knight

-1

Yeah but the sales were the indication as to what people listened to and was popular. People actually parted with their money compared to now it all seems fickle. People just sign up to Spotify or something and stream like crazy, but to me its a poor take on what artists are popular. Not compared to parting with hard earned cash when we had to buy a single.
But back then at leadt we had 2 songs on a 7inch single, and around 4 or 5 on a cd single, so we had better value for money.

DK

Dave Knight

-1

But you can see how thats disgusting towards the artist?

avatar

Michael Seager

1

Dave, I share your concern about streams and how they dominate the charts. The reason the Wham record was number one the week it was, was that weeks sale included Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The number of streams the Christmas songs got those two days far outweighed the rest got the rest of the week.
The contentious issue is how may streams should constitute a sale.

avatar

Rob Parkinson

3

Artists get far more money from streaming than that of a purchase, it just pays over time in small amounts but if you have a successful single even including songs from your era which are still pulling in money for the artists and record companies or whoever holds the rights to that music. Get a successful Xmas track and you are set up for life and beyond for your family!

DK

Dave Knight

-1

Well there was something on the radio just before xmas that artists are getting a raw deal from streaming, particularly older artists where they dont get a hit single compared to when it was a physical format. Plus if you look at a random chart week from decades gone by there was complete variety, now the charts are only full of a young purchasing audience. Even the stuff my dad liked was in the charts when I was a child and I hated it, but someone must have been buying it. But and rightly so they had a fair crack of the wip.

avatar

Damián

0

Absolutely crazy. And dont forget you tube views

avatar

Damián

0

It happens the same to me

avatar

Damián

1

Same happens to Kylie

DK

Dave Knight

-2

The problem I can see is Radio 2 actually have a larger listening audience than Radio 1, yet Radio 1 is home to the charts. So if for example a person over 40, or 50 years of age hears a record of the week they like, how are they supposed to buy it if they dont have Internet, or if they are not into streaming or downloading?
Chances are they are of an age that would prefer to buy the physical single.
So artists of a certain age are being pushed out.

I hope is just stereotypical modern country pop. The lyrics are clever in I Hope because of how “I hope you do well” 7 times and then “I hope it all disappears” at the end. So that’s good

Hey Dami! :)

I'm glad you like a majority of these throwbacks, especially: #1, #2, #5 & #9.

Thanks for the reply!

Piran

1

Thanks Jack! 'Cold Shoulder', or anything by Adele for that matter, is certainly a good choice. :)

avatar

Piran

2

A very good choice! That's definitely been in my throwbacks several times over the past few months. :)

Maybe the song will re-enter their iTunes chart because of it? It usually does on Independence Day! :P

one good one I'm feeling rn is The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin'
also check out the cover by Nancy Sinatra which has a lovely vibe to it as well

I haven't heard that in ages, but I'll have to revisit it now! ;)

I'm surprised the impact of drivers license didn't get any other of Olivias songs to chart like here in Ireland

avatar

Piran

'Good Days' will probably be in the Top 10 next week! :D

I didn’t even notice, what a great song. Really excited for an inevitable second album from her.

It’s not just ‘Drivers License’ that shows how much potential Olivia Rodrigo has going forward either! :D

Check out ‘All I Want’, which isn’t an “official” single, but it would still get a 10/10 for me!

I hope to see this really high in the charts soon too over the coming weeks! Hopefully it’s a slow burner.

i think it peaked at 72 or sum a year ago. :)

4

I think All I Want is going to enter next weeks chart as well to be honest.

It’s in the Top 30 or so on Spotify at least.

avatar

Piran

3

Yeah, I heard about that! Hopefully it re-enters next week. :)

avatar

Piran

3

That's looking good! Honestly, based on 'Drivers License' & 'All I Want', I can already tell how much potential Olivia Rodrigo has as a singer. :)

avatar

⁉️

4

Yeah, even though I’m not a fan of either song, I see clear potential from her musically.

And obviously, commercially, she’s gonna be insane, just look at how big her debut was.

avatar

Piran

2

I just hope that she isn't a one-hit wonder! That's what I was trying to get at, haha. :)

avatar

Piran

It looks like it's coming for a new peak next week then! ;)

What a shocking Number 1 I totally never would’ve expected. 🤯

In all seriousness, the song’s alright, probably a 4-6/10.

Unlucky that Little Mix had to be completely blasted off number 1, but hey, at least it got there (compared to Woman Like Me...)

Forgot that existed woman like me was a huge hit and now it's barely talked about anymore compared to others

Olivia Rodrigo becomes the third youngest artist ever to debut at #1 with their debut single behind Martin Garrix with Animals in 2013 and Billie Piper with Because We Want To in 1998

Woww, i still remember Billie Piper'!!

‘Save Your Tears’ is also an amazing addition to the Top 40! Definitely one of the best tracks from ‘After Hours’. :)

half of these upvotes are from 4 of your accounts. 😂

seriously though, i hope save your tears becomes a big hit and is not overexposed like boring lights lol.

Blame the trolls for that! :P

I still prefer 'Blinding Lights', but 'Save Your Tears' is growing on me fast, haha.

BEST CHRISTMAS SONG THEN BEST SONG BY A GIRL BAND THEN BEST DEBUT AT #1 IN THE SAME YEAR

So, my take on ‘Drivers License’…

… oh, my, God, wow! I was kind of in the same boat as everyone else in the sense that I was confused how a debut single from someone who is only briefly known for acting in High School Musical: The Musical: The Series could already get millions of streams each day, but then I actually heard the song & it became very clear as to why.

It has been months, maybe even years, since I heard a break-up anthem with this much raw emotion, which becomes even more incredible when you realise that Olivia Rodrigo is only 17 years old! It’s not just the singing either; the songwriting is immaculate too. It hits in such a potent yet bittersweet way, which is only highlighted further by that mesmerising bridge, which reminded me of Lorde’s voice when she was at her very best, occupied with the angelic production backing it up!

It’s relatable, it’s powerful, every feature about this song comes from the core of the heart & while I’m not going to say this will be the biggest song of 2021 just yet (we’re only halfway into the first month of the year), I can safely say that Olivia Rodrigo has set the bar extremely high going forward, both in commercial success & critical reception.

It’s an easy 10/10 for me! I genuinely wouldn’t mind this staying at #1 until ACR hits it. You know what, it could be there for even longer & honestly, it would deserve it! :D

IM SO GLAD THAT BEAUTIFUL SONG IS #1

10/10 is an understatement! Such a good song, broken SO MANY records! So happy for her!

avatar

I honestly wish I could give it a 100/10! It's truly spectacular, haha. :)

i agree with all your points, i heard so much emotion in the song and it’s worthy of being number 1 until acr grabs it’s ahh... yeah, nuff said, it’s an easy 10/10 from me. i just can’t get over how good this song is! i want this to become as overexposed as blinding lights and dance monkey now. 😍

avatar

Piran

3

I'm glad we agree on 'Drivers License' entirely! I just need to see it at #1 in your personal charts now, haha. :)

It's awful Enough with these wispy voiced singers. How many more of these whiny female singers do people want? There's plenty of strong voices out there, why would anyone want this?

avatar

Piran

4

Oh wow, I get that people are entitled to their own opinions, but the justification here was absolutely pathetic!

Olivia's vocals are not "wispy" nor "whiny"! In fact, they've been widely compared to Lorde (a comparison which I actually agree with) & she was one of the most critically acclaimed singers of the 2010's, as far as the mainstream is concerned.

Also, the fact that you targeted female singers specifically in a negative way just screams of misogyny to me, which is completely wrong!

Besides, in a time where break-up "anthems" are becoming increasingly more generic in pop, we needed something with sincere emotion, power & meaning, which is exactly what 'Drivers License' is. :)

Hey Dami! :)

I'm fine, thanks! I've had to come home for the next four weeks though, due to yet another national lockdown in the UK. :/

Hopefully you're doing okay too! :D
